Pleated Filter Cartridge / Element

Pleated filters are common filter styles used in various applications including air, gas, liquid & solid controls, and industries such as HVAC, Water Treatment / Purification, Power Generation, various sectors of the Oil & Gas Market (refineries, drilling, production, completion, etc). Pleated filters are produced by folding / crimping various filtration materials (commonly referred to as filter media) into accordion style / shaped pleats. Filter Pleats are available in a variety of depths usually ranging from 1 inch to 6 inches (most commonly found in the 1 – 2 inch pleat depth). Pleats are designed and used on these filter types for the need to increase and gain additional filter surface area, which allows for a much greater particulate capture capacity, and also extending the useful life of the filter element / cartridge.

Pleated filter life span varies depending on the filtration application & density of particulates being captured, ranging from a few hours to a day for extremely high particulate density, or in some systems where pre-filtration equipment is in place, or the mixture being filtered consists of a light concentration of particles, filter elements / cartridges could last for weeks, months or even a year before requiring change-out. Manufacturers of filter cartridges / elements provide system users with maximum working pressures in pounds per square inch (PSI) and differential pressures (commonly referred to as DP) which most filter maintenance departments rely on to determine appropriate times to change out filters. As the filter element / cartridge loads (fills up with captured particulate) the differential pressure (DP) will begin to increase indicating additional load on the pumps required to maintain the mixture flow through to filtration system.

Pleated filters have an advantage over some of the lower cost filters, such as bag / sock filters or simple sheets of filtration media, as the pleats (folds) in the filter material creates a larger surface are to capture particles. This gain in efficiency comes with added cost, both on the manufacturing side and the end-user, however the increase in cost is generally mitigated by a decrease in maintenance labor having to change-out the filter less often, freeing up the workforce for other critical maintenance tasks around you water treatment plant, recycling facility, refinery, power plant, desalination operation, or any of the other many industrial or residential application that exist. Depth cartridge filtration is a cost effective and in many cases more productive method of filtration, where pleated, bag, sock, etc. offer generally a single, or thin multiple layer filtration, depth cartridge filters (String Wound & Melt Blown) can be produced the capture particulates of varying sizes throughout the full depth of the cartridge / element. This allows for a much high load (capture rate) and addition life of the filter.
